Kailua-Kona Eye Doctor Discusses Exams for Contacts

Our Kailua-Kona eye doctor performs many types of eye exams. One of the most often requested types of exams is for contact lenses. Contacts are convenient and comfortable; they can also improve how you feel about yourself and how people see you. If you are like many people, though, you may not realize that there is a difference between a regular eye exam and a contact lens exam. Wally Kojima, O.D, would like to help you learn more about exams for contacts.

Exams for Contacts are Not the Same as Regular Exams from Our Optometrist in Kailua-Kona

Exams for contacts are different from regular exams. During a regular exam, our optometrist in Kailua-Kona checks your eyes for a number of eye conditions and diseases, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration, as appropriate. These conditions usually present no symptoms while in the earliest stages, when the diseases are easiest to treat, so our Kailua-Kona eye doctor checks for these diseases during regular exams.

A regular exam is also a good time to check your visual acuity, which measures how well you can see nearby and faraway objects. A Snellen eye chart tells you if you have 20/20 vision, which means you can see something 20 feet away as well as someone with perfect vision.

Our optometrist places a series of lenses in front of your eyes to determine if you have a refractive error, commonly known as being nearsighted, farsighted, or having astigmatism. Our eye doctor would prescribe corrective eyeglass lenses based on your visual acuity and refractive errors.

Kailua-Kona Eye Doctor Describes Exam for Contacts

After performing a comprehensive evaluation to ensure the health of your eyes and a visual acuity check to determine if you have a refractive error, you may ask that our Kailua-Kona eye doctor perform an eye exam for contacts so that you can wear contact lenses instead of conventional eyeglasses.

After determining the prescription needed to correct refractive errors, our eye doctor will gather additional information to help you decide which type of contact lens is right for you. Our optometrist might ask if you wish to change the color of your eyes, for example, or find out if you are interested in disposable contacts or lenses for overnight weight. You may prefer rigid gas permeable lenses, which provide clearer vision, or soft lenses that are more comfortable.

Our optometrist in Kailua-Kona may discuss the use of bifocal contacts if you are over the age of 40 and suffer from presbyopia, a condition that decreases your ability to read small print or focus on nearby objects.

Finally, our Kailua-Kona eye doctor will measure the curvature of your cornea, which is the clear front surface of the eye. These measurements ensure a proper, comfortable fit.
